Q.) How much aggregate should be used for an Interlock patio or walkway?
A.) With our climate in Ottawa, using 8"-10" of crushed stone will do the job but our standard excavation depth is 12". The more depth added to the crushed stone base will increase it's durability and resistance to heaving.
Q.) Why do weeds grow through Interlock? Can they be stopped?
A.) The weeds don't actually grow through the interlock. They grow in the cracks of the interlock where sand had been swept in previously. To reduce weed growth significantly, instead of filling the cracks with sand, we sweep in limestone screenings which harden to rock. This keeps the weed problem at bay and keeps the ants away too!
Q.) I've seen bricks that have spread apart from each other. How do you keep the bricks from doing this?
A.) In recent years, a new product has become available to reduce and almost stop this problem completely. Often referred to as "Snap-Edge", this hard yet pliable plastic buts up along the outer edges of the interlock while 12" spikes are drivin through it. A brick stopping system is standard on all of our projects.
Q.) How long does Interlock last for?
A.) An Interlock project that is properly installed should typically last between 15-20 years. The key to any installation is the crushed stone base. The more of a base, the longer the life of the project will be.
Q.) Can I use a sealant on my interlock?
A.) Yes! You can use a sealant on your interlock project but you will want to wait for a couple of months after it is installed. We wait to ensure that all potential contaminates are washed off. Salt and other products are used in packaging to decrease friction between the paver's on delivery.
Q.) How do we find out where the gas line, phone line and other utilities are underground?
A.) A simple phone call to Promark - Telecon is all it takes! Their primary function is to locate underground utilities in order to prevent possible damages during excavation. They mark out all communication, gas, oil, electricity, water and sewer lines prior to us starting your project.
